UST coach Aldin Ayo says Tatay Aric inspired him to go to Manila

Aldin Ayo and Aric Del Rosario’s connection extends far beyond University of Sto. Tomas. As it turns out, Del Rosario was one of Ayo’s inspirations in basketball. “Malaki ang impact sa akin ni Coach Aric lalo yung four-peat team niya,” Ayo said of the legendary coach who passed away a week ago. “Lumaki akong sila ang pinapanood ko nung nasa Sorsogon pa ako. Isa siya sa mga dahilan bakit ako nagpursiging makapunta sa Manila.” When Coach Aric won four consecutive championships with the Growling Tigers, Aldin was still a teen in his hometown of Sorsogon. Apparently, though, that black and gold dynasty was one of the seeds that ultimately took root inside of Ayo. Not long after, he was in Colegio de San Juan de Letran and won his own title as a Knight in 1999. Fast forward 16 years and Al...

Philippine mayors step up pandemic response in helping communities cope with lockdown

Trina Alejandra Firmalo-Fabic, a town mayor in the Philippines, was surprised when President Rodrigo Duterte announced on March 16 that he would lock down the entire island of Luzon. The one-month lockdown aims to stem the rising cases of COVID-19 infection in the Southeast Asian country. The directive, however, worried Fabic, the 38-year-old mayor of Odiongan. The coastal town is in the province of Romblon, more than 200 kilometers south of the Philippine capital, Manila. Most of its 45,000 residents rely on fishing and farming for their livelihoods and get basic supplies through the ferries that dock in its port. But the lockdown requires that everyone in Luzon – home to roughly half of the country’s 105 million population – stays at home and practices social distancing. And this cr...

They should not shy away from this responsibility and should instead embrace and accept this challenge. They could make a difference in the lives of others, he added. Don’t let history judge you harshly! “Few are given the chance by history to be able to help his fellowmen and be called upon to perform/deliver on his sworn duty. This is that time!
